A Proud History

In June 1898, the North West Mounted Police noted the arrival of a man from Japan, who had come to seek his fortune in gold.

With only one name, Tanaka, he was likely the first of many of Asian descent who would settle in the area now known as the Yukon.

Records from the time aren’t specific as to how many were Japanese vs Chinese vs other Asian peoples, but we know many people of Japanese decent settled in the Yukon began to build lives and careers in many fields.

Many early Japanese immigrants to Canada were single young men, often from Hiroshima, Shiga, Wakayama, and Kagoshima.  They intended to make money before returning to Japan.

Preserving Stories

We believe it’s vital to capture both historical accounts and the living history of Japanese Canadians here in the Yukon.

Projects like Lillian Nakamura Maguire’s Mapping My Journey to Home is a collection of personal memories and stories that she hopes will be a starting point for other families to start sharing their own history with each other and their community.

Lillian has also published an article about the Japanese Canadian soldiers from World War 1, including five young men from Dawson City.
